Basic Manners Course Overview

A basic manners course for dogs is designed to teach essential cues and social skills that promote good behaviour in various environments. It focuses on developing a well-mannered companion who can interact positively with people and other dogs.

Course Objectives

  • Understand fundamental dog behaviours and communication.

  • Teach commands such as sit, stay, come, and leave it.

  • Promote proper socialisation with other dogs and people.

  • Address common behaviour issues like jumping and barking.

Course Structure

  1. Introduction to Training

    • Importance of positive reinforcement

    • Tools for training (leashes, treats, clickers)

  2. Basic Cues

    • Sit: Teaching your dog to sit on cue.

    • Stay: Practising self-control through staying in one place.

    • Recall: Encouraging your dog to return to you reliably.

    • Leave It: Teaching your dog to ignore unwanted items.

  3. Leash Manners

    • Walking politely on a leash

    • Techniques to discourage pulling

  4. Socialisation Skills

    • Safe introductions to new environments

    • Proper greetings with other dogs and people

  5. Handling Common Behaviour Issues

    • Strategies to manage jumping up

    • Methods to reduce excessive barking

  6. Building a Lasting Bond

    • Importance of practice and consistency

    • Continuing training at home

Course Details

  • Duration: 5 weeks, one hour per session

  • Suitable For: older puppies and adult dogs

  • Materials Needed: a well fitted flat collar, harness, leash, treats

Virtual sessions provided for clients who live outside of Saskatoon and area
